and craft careers

Curious about how things are made?

A work experience placement could be your first step.

Discover what you could make

At Good Directions, we want to help young people discover the satisfaction of designing, making and engineering things that last a lifetime.

A workshop full of possibilities

Our clocks, architectural features and metalwork bring together engineering, creativity and craftsmanship.  We combine computer aided design, CNC machining and laser cutting with traditional skills including copperworking, clockmaking, gilding and timber pattern making.

Keeping traditional skills alive

We particularly want to encourage young people towards crafts recognised on the Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts. Learning, practising and passing on these skills helps protect their future.

Work experience

We offer placements through UTC Portsmouth and other schools’ work experience programmes. Depending on current projects, you could explore workshop activities, clock assembly and testing, and see how ideas become finished products.

What we look for

Curiosity, reliability, care and a willingness to learn. You do not need to know everything. Asking questions, taking pride in your work and being prepared to have a go are good places to start.

Could an apprenticeship follow

With a team of 13, we recruit occasionally. For the right person, subject to suitable work and training capacity, we would welcome the opportunity to explore an apprenticeship.
